An Alaska Island’s Mission to Locate an Elusive Rat

Residents on St. Paul Island in Alaska reported a possible rat sighting, causing alarm due to the potential devastation rats can cause to bird populations on remote islands. Wildlife officials searched for evidence of the rat’s presence but found nothing so far. The island has a robust rodent surveillance program and is taking proactive measures, such as using chew blocks and potentially bringing in a dog to sniff out rats, to prevent an infestation.

Efforts to eradicate rats from remote islands have been successful worldwide, including in Alaska’s Aleutian chain, formerly known as “Rat Island.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is planning to conduct an environmental review to eliminate potentially tens of thousands of rats on four Aleutian islands to protect the diverse seabird populations. The success of previous eradication efforts on Rat Island led to the restoration of native bird species and a return to its original Unangan name, Hawadax.

The potential five-year eradication project highlights the importance of protecting seabirds already facing challenges from climate change. The ecosystems on islands with established rat populations suffer significant declines in bird diversity and numbers. Residents and conservationists in Alaska are working diligently to safeguard their islands’ ecosystems and prevent invasive species from threatening the region’s biodiversity.
