On Monday, Ahmad Alissa was convicted by a Colorado jury on all 55 charges stemming from the horrific attack at a Boulder supermarket where he gunned down 10 people more than three years ago. The charges included 10 counts of first-degree murder for the March 2021 assault at King Soopers. The verdict was reached after about six hours of deliberation by the Boulder County panel and each count was read out loud in court by District Court Chief Judge Ingrid Bakke.
Alissa, 25, did not show any demonstrative reaction as the verdicts were read and appeared to speak with his defense team throughout the process. His defense lawyers had not contested that he was the shooter but argued for not guilty by diminished capacity due to his schizophrenia diagnosis, claiming he could not distinguish between right and wrong.
Legal analyst Whitney Traylor noted that the quick verdict was expected, stating that it would have been difficult for the jury to reach any other conclusion. The victims of the attack included Neven Stanisic, Tralona Bartkowiak, Denny Stong, Teri Leiker, Suzanne Fountain, Kevin Mahoney, Lynn Murray, Jody Waters, Rikki Olds, and Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley.
