Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man, was charged in connection with an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in Florida. A court document revealed that Routh dropped off a box at someone’s home containing a letter declaring it as an assassination attempt. The box also contained ammunition, four phones, and various letters, one of which was addressed to “The World” admitting to the failed attempt on Trump’s life. Routh was arrested after a Secret Service agent at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach spotted him with a rifle aimed at Trump.
Further investigation revealed that Routh had multiple phones with one containing a Google search on how to travel to Mexico. He had traveled from North Carolina to Florida in August and had been in the area near Trump International and Mar-a-Lago multiple times. In his vehicle, agents found gloves, a Hawaii driver’s license, a passport, and documents related to Ukraine, China, and Russia. A notebook with names and numbers, a rifle with an obliterated serial number, and plates capable of stopping small arms fire were also discovered.
Additionally, the license plate on Routh’s vehicle was not registered, and two additional plates were found inside. A search of the area where he was hiding led to the discovery of the weapon used in the attempt. Investigators also found a latent fingerprint on the rifle that preliminarily matched Routh. He is currently facing charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Routh is scheduled to appear in court for further proceedings.
