Prosecutors: Suspect in second assassination attempt on Trump left note expressing intent to kill ex-president – Updates on US elections 2024

Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of a second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, acknowledged his intention in a note discovered by police, prosecutors revealed on Monday. In the note, he stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.” Routh handed a package containing the note to an unnamed witness before his arrest. The package also contained ammunition, a metal pipe, building materials, tools, four phones, and various letters, including one addressed to “The World.”

Furthermore, FBI agents found that Routh’s two cellphones were repeatedly geolocated near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and golf course in Florida in the weeks leading up to the alleged attempt. Additionally, Routh possessed a notebook with names and phone numbers related to Ukraine, along with discussions about joining combat on behalf of Ukraine and criticism of China and Russia. He also authored a book in February 2023 titled “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War,” in which he mentioned feeling partially responsible for Trump’s presidency and called for his assassination.

The incident has sparked concerns about political violence, particularly amid rising tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Hezbollah forces. Meanwhile, a new poll shows Kamala Harris trailing Trump in Sun Belt swing states, but her favorability ratings have seen a significant spike. The White House has announced plans for Joe Biden’s “sprint to the finish” in his final months in office, focusing on advancing his agenda, addressing climate change, and strengthening international alliances.
