A report published by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has accused several major corporations, including Amazon, Tesla, Meta, ExxonMobil, Blackstone, Vanguard, and Glencore, of undermining democracy worldwide. The report highlights various actions taken by these companies, including union busting, anti-worker practices, funding far-right political movements, and violating human rights.
Amazon, for example, has been criticized for its low wages, high injury rates, and efforts to thwart unionization globally. Tesla has faced scrutiny for its anti-union stance and human rights violations within its supply chain. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been accused of allowing far-right propaganda on its platform, while Glencore has been linked to financing campaigns against Indigenous communities.
The report also implicates Blackstone for its involvement in funding far-right political movements, Vanguard for financing anti-democratic corporations, and ExxonMobil for funding anti-climate science research.
The ITUC is calling for international and multi-sectoral strategies to hold these multinational corporations accountable and shift power away from corporate interests towards democracy and workers’ rights. The federation is also pushing for an international binding treaty to hold transnational corporations accountable under international human rights laws.
With elections approaching in 2024 and the growing influence of these corporations, the ITUC is advocating for increased global cooperation to address these challenges and protect democracy and workers’ rights.
