South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that there was “no criminal intent” found in the investigation surrounding the failed $21 million Panthers project in South Carolina. The project, which aimed to bring the NFL’s Carolina Panthers’ headquarters and practice facilities to the state, ultimately fell through due to financial issues.
The investigation began in 2018 after the South Carolina Department of Administration requested the AG’s Office look into the failed deal. The findings revealed that there were no criminal violations, and therefore no charges will be pressed against those involved in the project.
The failed Panthers project was highly anticipated by many in the state, as bringing the NFL team to South Carolina would have provided an economic boost and brought prestige to the region. However, despite initial excitement, the deal ultimately fell through, leaving many disappointed.
Despite the lack of criminal intent found in the investigation, questions still remain about the handling of the project and where the $21 million in taxpayer funds ultimately went. The AG’s Office stated that the investigation “uncovered all of the facts that were available” and that further action would be taken if additional information comes to light.
The failed Panthers project serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of thorough due diligence and oversight when it comes to large-scale development deals. While no criminal wrongdoing was found in this case, the scrutiny surrounding the project highlights the need for transparency and accountability in all public-private partnerships.
