Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pleading with allies for permission to use western weapons, including long-range missiles, to strike deep inside Russia in an effort to limit Moscow’s ability to launch attacks. Zelenskyy warned that without this permission, tens of thousands of lives could be lost and thousands of schools destroyed. He is expected to present his “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden during his diplomatic visit to the US this week. This plan, which includes an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, aims to end the conflict diplomatically.
During an interview with Good Morning America, Zelenskyy discussed the threat of Russian strikes on nuclear facilities and the slow progress of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. He expressed his desire to find a way to end the conflict diplomatically rather than negotiate with Russia. Zelenskyy also plans to meet with US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris during his visit.
In other news, Russian forces have begun storming the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, previously resistant to attacks. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the upcoming Brics summit. Zelenskyy’s senior official confirmed that an invitation to join NATO is part of Ukraine’s “victory plan,” which aims to secure more aid from allies to force Russia to end the conflict on terms acceptable to Ukraine.
