New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with five federal crimes, including wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national. Prosecutors allege that Adams accepted luxury international travel from foreign businesspeople, including a Turkish government official, in exchange for official favors dating back nearly a decade. Adams failed to disclose the lavish trips and received over $100,000 in free or discounted travel on Turkey’s national airline, among other gifts. He kept fake paper trails and deleted messages to hide his misconduct. The indictment also alleges that Adams pressured the New York City Fire Department into allowing a new Turkish consular building to open despite safety concerns, in exchange for the benefits he received. The charges also include receiving illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors. The indictment was made public following an FBI search of Adams’ home and Gracie Mansion. While prominent politicians have called for his resignation, Adams has vowed to fight the charges and defend himself against the allegations, saying any charges against him are false. The investigation into Adams and his administration is part of several federal probes into possible corruption within the city government. Despite the mounting challenges, Adams remains defiant and focused on his role as mayor, while promising to defend himself and the people of the city.
