The U.S., the European Union, and several other countries have jointly called for a 21-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah to allow for negotiations. This proposal comes after Israel’s military chief mentioned a potential ground invasion into Lebanon. Since Hamas’s terrorist attack in October, there has been cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The violence has displaced thousands in both countries. The goal of the cease-fire is to halt the violence and jump-start peace talks between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The U.S. has been engaged in shuttle diplomacy to secure support for the proposal. Israel has expressed willingness to give diplomacy a chance but is prepared to take further action if necessary to protect its people. The fear of a ground invasion by Israel into Lebanon is looming, as Israeli forces have been preparing for such an operation. The U.S. is not providing intelligence support for Israel’s current operations in Lebanon. The region is on edge as the conflict continues, and there is hope for a peaceful resolution to prevent further escalation. President Biden has acknowledged the potential for an all-out war but also sees an opportunity for a settlement that could positively impact the entire region.
