In a surprising turn of events, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an effort to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. This announcement comes on the heels of US President Joe Biden’s unveiling of over $8 billion in new military assistance for Kyiv, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris’s promise of unwavering support for Ukraine.
Trump has previously criticized Ukraine’s ability to combat Russia and questioned the level of US backing for the country. Despite his past skepticism, Trump now claims that he could secure a peace deal to end the conflict. He will meet with Zelenskyy in New York on Friday to discuss potential solutions.
Harris, in a separate event, reiterated her support for Ukraine and indirectly criticized Trump’s approach to the conflict. She stated that those advocating for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia in exchange for peace are promoting ideas of surrender, highlighting the differing approaches between the two candidates.
This meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy marks the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since Trump’s presidency ended in 2021. The Ukrainian president had previously expressed hope to present his “victory plan” to Biden, Harris, and Trump during the United Nations General Assembly.
Despite his previous criticisms of Zelenskyy, including claims that the Ukrainian leader wanted Harris to win the election, Trump now appears willing to engage in diplomatic efforts to end the war. The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
