West Virginia State Senator Mike Maroney, a Republican, is facing pressure to resign after being arrested for drunk driving, his second arrest in two months. The chairman of the Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee, Ethan Moore, has called for Maroney’s resignation to restore public trust in the Senate. Moore’s committee passed a resolution urging Maroney to step down and asking Governor Jim Justice to take action if he refuses.
Maroney, who lost in the Republican primary in May, is set to leave office in January. He had been chair of the state Senate Health and Human Resources Committee but was removed from the position after being arrested for indecent exposure in a video lottery room. Maroney’s most recent arrest was for driving under the influence in a school zone.
Maroney has faced legal trouble in the past, including a 2019 arrest for soliciting prostitution, which was later dropped. He has pleaded not guilty to his two most recent charges. Maroney has not yet commented on the calls for his resignation. The Republican Party in West Virginia is seeking to remove him from office to repair the integrity of the Senate and restore public trust in the government.
