Israel’s military has claimed that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed in a massive strike on Beirut. Hezbollah has not confirmed the reports, but if true, Nasrallah would join a list of other Middle Eastern leaders targeted by Israel in recent months.
Among those reportedly killed by Israel are Hezbollah leaders Ibrahim Qubaisi, Ibrahim Aqil, Ahmed Wahbi, Fuad Shukr, Muhammed Nasser, and Taleb Abdallah. Hamas leaders Mohammed Deif, Ismail Haniyeh, and Saleh al-Arouri have also been targeted by Israel. Additionally, Iranian officials Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi were killed in an air strike in Damascus.
These targeted killings come amid a sharp escalation of violence in the region since October 7. Israel has been blamed for various strikes on Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, resulting in their deaths. The killings have not gone unchallenged, with retaliation in the form of rocket attacks fired across the border in response to the deaths of senior figures.
The latest killing of Hassan Nasrallah, if confirmed, would mark another significant blow to Hezbollah’s leadership. The group has been a key player in the region for over three decades, and Nasrallah’s death could have far-reaching consequences for the organization and the wider Middle East. The situation remains fluid, with tensions between Israel and its adversaries continuing to escalate.
