Hurricane Helene has caused significant destruction across the Southeast, resulting in at least 175 deaths and hundreds of people still missing. Power outages are widespread, leaving 1.3 million energy customers without electricity from Florida to Virginia. Many homes have been wiped out, especially in hard-hit North Carolina where entire communities have been destroyed.
Various national organizations are accepting donations to help those affected by the storm, including the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Americares. In North Carolina, where 90 people have died, Governor Roy Cooper is encouraging donations to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund. President Joe Biden has deployed active duty soldiers to aid in delivering supplies to isolated communities.
In Florida, which reported 14 deaths, Governor Ron DeSantis activated the Florida Disaster Fund to assist in recovery efforts. In Georgia, where 25 deaths have been reported, Send Relief is providing meals, water, and other supplies to affected areas.
FEMA recommends cash donations to organizations on the ground as the most effective way to help. The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster website provides a list of trusted organizations to donate to, and Charity Navigator rates charities providing relief to those affected by the hurricane. Your support can make a significant impact in assisting those affected by Hurricane Helene.
