South Korea showcased its most powerful ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5, at an annual military parade as a demonstration of its readiness to respond to North Korean threats. The missile is capable of carrying an 8-tonne warhead and can penetrate deep underground, aiming to destroy North Korean bunkers. President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasized that the country and the South Korea-US alliance are prepared to respond resolutely to any potential nuclear threats from North Korea, stating that it would mean the end of the North Korean regime.
Yoon has revived the tradition of military parades since taking office in 2022, with the goal of maintaining peace through strength and strengthening the military alliance with the United States. This year’s parade also included a flypast by a United States B-1B strategic bomber for the first time. The Hyunmoo-5 missile, dubbed a “monster missile” by South Korean media, was successfully tested last year and plays a key role in the country’s defense system against North Korea’s nuclear provocations.
In response to the parade, North Korea’s vice defense minister criticized the US B-1B flypast and accused the US of conducting a “reckless military bluff” by sending a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea. North Korea has also continued to conduct weapons test launches and recently released images of its uranium enrichment facility. South Korea’s display of military might serves as a strong message to North Korea and the international community about its preparedness to defend against any potential threats.
