Actor Jay Johnston, known for roles in TV shows like “Anchorman” and “Bob’s Burgers”, was sentenced to 12 months and a day in federal prison for his involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Johnston pleaded guilty to obstructing officers during the chaos and federal prosecutors sought an 18-month sentence due to his actions during the attack. Johnston was seen dressing up as the ‘QAnon Shaman’ for a Halloween party in 2022, mocking his participation in the riot. Despite his involvement in the violence, Johnston downplayed the events to friends and family afterwards.
In court documents, prosecutors detailed Johnston’s actions during the attack, including helping rioters wash their eyes after being sprayed with pepper spray and participating in pushing a police officer against a door frame. Johnston’s lawyer argued that his role was overstated due to his status as a Hollywood actor and that he has suffered significant consequences, being essentially blacklisted from the industry.
More than 1,500 people have been arrested in connection to the Capitol attack, with over 1,100 convictions so far. The severity of sentences has varied, with some individuals receiving as much as 22 years in federal prison. Additional arrests are still taking place, including for assailants who attacked officers during the chaos.
