University of South Florida professor Neil Bender recently underwent a life-saving liver transplant, highlighting the importance of organ donation and new medical technology. After a rollercoaster year, Neil Bender received a match on July 13th, just three days before his 48th birthday. The surgery was successful, thanks to the advanced perfusion technology used at Tampa General Hospital Transplant Institute.
Dr. Kiran Dhanireddy, Vice President of the hospital, explained how this technology has revolutionized organ transport, allowing for more organs to be utilized for transplantation, ultimately saving more lives. The new technology preserves and perfuses organs with blood, enabling better preservation and functionality during transport.
Bender expressed immense gratitude for his second chance at life, emphasizing how lucky he feels. Dr. Dhanireddy shared that the hospital is on track to perform 275 liver transplants this year, making TGH one of the top liver transplant programs in the country. The success of Bender’s transplant and the utilization of new technology showcase the positive impact of advancements in medical science on patients in need of organ transplants.
In contrast, Pinellas County Commissioner Jack Latvala expressed feeling betrayed by the Tampa Bay Rays’ decision to play at George M. Steinbrenner Field next season instead of a minor league ballpark in Pinellas County. This announcement has caused disappointment and frustration among local officials, sparking debates over the team’s choice of venue for the 2025 season.
