The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a highly pathogenic form of bird flu in a person in Oregon, who is linked to an outbreak at a commercial poultry operation where the virus has been confirmed in 150,000 birds. A total of 52 people from seven states in the U.S. have tested positive this year, all of whom were farm workers with known contact with infected animals, except for one person in Missouri. Health officials report no evidence of person-to-person transmission and low risk to the public. Last month, the H5N1 bird flu was detected in a pig on a backyard farm in Oregon, the first instance of the virus in swine in the U.S. The CDC advises that farm workers exposed to animals with bird flu should be tested even if they show no symptoms. Since 2022, the virus has resulted in the deaths of over 100 million poultry birds in the nation’s worst-ever bird flu outbreak.
