Gamecocks Dominate Coppin State in Season Opener, Celebrate Championship Banner
COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Gamecocks continued their impressive winning streak, securing a 92-60 victory over Coppin State on Thursday night. This triumph marked their 41st consecutive win and celebrated the unveiling of their national championship banner from their perfect 38-0 run last season.
Leading the charge for South Carolina (3-0) was MiLaysia Fulwiley, who scored 23 points, and Chloe Kitts, who contributed a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kitts returned to the lineup after missing Sunday’s match against No. 13 NC State due to an academic issue. Fulwiley was particularly effective from beyond the arc, hitting four of the team’s 10 three-pointers, while South Carolina extended its remarkable home winning streak to 60 games.
Coppin State (2-2) struggled to keep pace against the formidable Gamecocks, with Laila Lawrence leading her team with 20 points. The Eagles faced a challenging schedule, including six games against teams in power leagues, and experienced the daunting task of competing with the reigning national champions for the second consecutive year.
Key moments included a decisive 10-0 run by South Carolina at the end of the first quarter, turning a brief 16-13 deficit into a commanding lead. The Gamecocks dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Coppin State 51-23, showcasing their physical advantage.
Looking ahead, Coppin State will seek to bounce back against Virginia Tech on Saturday, while South Carolina will host East Carolina on Sunday, aiming to maintain their perfect start to the season.
