WKU Cross Country Concludes Season at NCAA Southeast Regional

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Western Kentucky University (WKU) Cross Country team wrapped up its 2024 season at the NCAA Southeast Regional held on Friday at Winthrop Farm Meadows. Representing the Hilltoppers in the women’s 6k race were Mary Dye and Kinley Kunkel, who both concluded their seasons with commendable performances.

Dye led the way for WKU, finishing 66th with a time of 22:03, while Kunkel secured 87th place, crossing the finish line in 22:21. The duo faced a formidable field of over 250 competitors, including defending national champions North Carolina State and fifth-ranked Liberty.

This race marked the third time during the season that senior Mary Dye has been the top performer for the team. Throughout the season, she consistently placed in the top-70, showcasing her resilience and competitive spirit. Kunkel’s performance also contributes to the team’s strong finish as both runners improved upon their individual standings. Notably, Dye’s finish represents WKU’s best individual result at the regional meet since Savannah Heckman’s 58th place finish in 2021.

Dye’s appearance at the NCAA meet was her third in four years, a testament to her growth as an athlete. The senior significantly improved her time from her sophomore year, finishing this year’s race 3:33 faster and 154 spots higher than in 2022.

Head coach Lee Wood praised the athletes for their efforts despite muddy course conditions, stating, "The ladies competed hard! They got out and raced well to finish off a great season!"

With Dye and Kunkel’s performances, WKU Cross Country looks forward to future seasons with optimism.
