Austin Suman, a man from South Carolina, has been arrested for making racist death threats online to a New York reporter. He was charged with making threats involving explosives and interstate stalking, facing a maximum of 20 years in prison. Suman sent threatening messages to the reporter in November, using racial slurs and derogatory language. His anger was sparked by an article the reporter wrote about him in February 2019, which involved allegations of him threatening a roommate with a gun. In the messages, Suman claimed to have more guns and threatened to harm the reporter and their family. Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of threats against the press, stating that those who make hate-based threats will be found and held accountable for their actions. Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, reiterated that neutralizing threats against the press is a top priority. It is not clear if Suman has obtained legal representation at this time.
