Leavitt previously served as the national press secretary for Trump’s campaign and has been a spokesperson for his transition team since Election Day. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work for Trump and celebrate his victory. Trump also named Steven Cheung as the director of communications.
Leavitt has defended Trump’s rhetoric, arguing that he is speaking to the reality in the country and criticizing media outlets as “fake news.” She previously ran for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022 but was unsuccessful. Leavitt had also worked as an assistant press secretary during Trump’s first term.
In a statement, Trump expressed confidence that Leavitt will excel at the podium and help deliver the administration’s message to the American people. NBC News reached out to Leavitt for comment but has not received a response. Leavitt’s appointment comes as part of a series of staff changes as Trump prepares for his presidency.
