President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-provided long-range weapons inside Russia for limited strikes, including Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). This decision was made as North Korea deployed troops to support Russian forces fighting Ukrainian forces. Previously, U.S. officials had resisted providing ATACMS to Ukraine due to concerns about a limited stockpile and the success of other assets like drones. However, the recent North Korean deployment led to a policy shift in allowing Ukraine to use ATACMS where Russian and North Korean troops are concentrated.
The Pentagon and White House have not commented on this decision, which marks a change in U.S. policy towards supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. President-elect Donald Trump has indicated plans to limit U.S. support for Ukraine and end the war with Russia. American aid to Ukraine has been crucial in helping the country defend itself against Russian attacks, with $175 billion in aid provided.
In May, Biden secretly allowed Ukraine to use American weapons to strike Russia just over the border, but longer-range weapons were prohibited. The recent barrage of missiles launched by Russia into Ukraine, resulting in casualties and damage to infrastructure, has underscored the need for increased support for Ukraine. Biden’s decision to authorize the use of long-range weapons inside Russia represents a significant escalation in support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
