Lab Monkey-Themed Run Organized Following Monkeys’ Escape from Research Facility

Monkey Mayhem in Port Royal: Lab Monkey Freedom Run Set for Sunday

PORT ROYAL, S.C. — In a whimsical response to the recent escape of 43 monkeys from a research facility in Yemassee, Shellring Ale Works is hosting a Lab Monkey Freedom Run this Sunday at 2 p.m. The event, organized in partnership with Dustbone Apparel and Grounded Running, takes place at the taproom located at 1111 11th Street.

The run not only celebrates the cheeky escape but also marks the launch of Shellring’s latest brew, a banana imperial stout aptly named "Escape to Morgan Island." Open to all — including walkers, joggers, competitive and non-competitive runners, as well as stroller pushers — the organizers encourage participants to embrace the theme by dressing as lab technicians or monkeys, although bikes and dogs are discouraged.

Registration kicks off at noon for a fee of $20, which includes a commemorative race t-shirt, one beer, and live music to enjoy before and after the run. Upon check-in, participants will receive a ticket for their shirt and a token for their beer. In a family-friendly twist, the first 50 kids are invited to get their faces painted as monkeys at no cost.

Proceeds from the run will benefit "Born Free USA," an organization focused on rehoming monkeys. To add to the fun, a "local legend monkey" will be on the course, creating a festive atmosphere and offering prizes to runners who finish ahead of it.

Parking is available in the field behind the brewery when the on-site lot fills up, and participants will tackle a scenic 1.7-mile circuit. As of Thursday, registration was reported sold out, with shirts still available for purchase. This unique event promises a mix of health, humor, and charity, making it a must-attend for local residents.
