Las Vegas police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old father, Brandon Durham, who had called 911 for help during a home break-in in the Sunset Park neighborhood. Durham reported that people were shooting outside his home and trying to break in, leading to a police response. Body camera footage showed an officer shooting Durham, who was involved in a struggle with a suspect, Alejandra Boudreaux, who was arrested and is facing charges. The officer fired multiple shots, resulting in Durham’s death and the arrest of Boudreaux. The police believe the incident was targeted and not random violence. Boudreaux allegedly broke into the home to provoke a police response, known as “suicide by cop.” The officer’s use of force is being reviewed according to the Supreme Court’s standard in the Graham v. Connor case, which established an “objective reasonableness” standard for use of force. Durham’s daughter expressed anger towards the police department for her father’s death. The investigation is ongoing, and support resources are available for those in crisis.
