Pirates’ Fairy-Tale Season Comes to a Close in NCAA Tournament Loss to No. 14/18 South Carolina, 6-0

The East Carolina soccer team’s record-breaking season came to an end with a 6-0 loss to South Carolina. The Gamecocks were led by Katie Shea Collins and Catherine Barry who scored a hat trick and a brace, respectively. South Carolina dominated the game, with early goals putting them ahead. Despite a strong effort from East Carolina, South Carolina’s offense was too much to handle.

Despite the loss, there were some positives for the Pirates. Maeve English became the 25th goalkeeper in NCAA history to play 8,000 career minutes and Abby Sowa ended her career with an impressive streak of consecutive minutes played. English and Annabelle Abbott also set program records for games played and starts. The Pirates finished the season with their 11th 10-plus win season in program history and improved win percentage for the sixth straight year.

Overall, despite the disappointing end to their season, the Pirates can look back on a successful year with many accomplishments. The team fought hard and showed resilience throughout the season. Head coach Jamie Dempster praised the team’s efforts and remained optimistic for the future. While the loss to South Carolina was tough, the Pirates can be proud of what they achieved and look forward to building on their successes in the seasons to come.

In conclusion, the East Carolina soccer team may have suffered a tough defeat, but they can hold their heads high as they reflect on a historic season full of accomplishments and milestones.
