South Carolina State Clinches MEAC Title with Dominant Win Over Morgan State
BALTIMORE, Md. (AP) — South Carolina State’s football team made a strong statement on Saturday, overpowering Morgan State 54-7 to secure the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. The Bulldogs improved their season record to 8-2, standing undefeated in conference play at 4-0, marking their first eight-win season since 2019.
The game opened with Eric Phoenix, who completed 10-of-11 passes, throwing a 31-yard touchdown to Justin Smith-Brown late in the first quarter. However, Phoenix exited the game early in the second after an awkward slide, leaving backup Ryan Stubblefield to take the helm and lead the offense effectively.
South Carolina State surged ahead with an impressive 86-yard touchdown run by Tyler Smith, followed by a 32-yard interception return touchdown by Jarod Washington, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 19-0. Morgan State managed to score their only touchdown in the second quarter with an 11-yard run from Malique Leatherbury but struggled to keep pace.
The Bulldogs’ defense was relentless, highlighted by Diego Addison’s 100-yard interception return touchdown in the third quarter, pushing the score to 47-7. The victory showcased South Carolina State’s explosive offense and formidable defense, with their robust performance leaving little room for challenge from the Bears.
As the regular season winds down, South Carolina State is set to face Norfolk State on November 23. Regardless of the outcome, the Bulldogs will advance to the Celebration Bowl on December 14, where they will compete against the winner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship game. This victory not only affirms their dominance in the conference but also sets the stage for an exciting postseason.
