Albanese administration firmly rejects participating in UK-US deal to promote nuclear technology

The Albanese government faces scrutiny for declining to join a new agreement between the UK and US aimed at advancing nuclear technology. The agreement, signed during COP29, aims to promote nuclear technology to decarbonize industry and enhance energy security. Australia, originally expected to sign the agreement, did not join as it lacks a nuclear energy industry and believes its abundance of renewable energy resources make nuclear power an unviable option for decarbonization efforts. However, Australia will continue to support its scientists in other nuclear research fields as observers to the agreement.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton criticized the government’s decision, calling Australia an international embarrassment under Energy Minister Chris Bowen and PM Albanese. The statement from the British government highlighted the potential for new technologies like advanced modular reactors to decarbonize heavy industries such as aviation fuel and steel production. The Coalition has positioned nuclear power at the center of their energy policy, identifying seven proposed sites for nuclear power plants around the country.

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles argued against pursuing nuclear energy, stating it would increase household bills by $1200. The agreement aims to pool together billions of pounds worth of nuclear research and development from leading academic institutions and nuclear innovators. The Australian government’s decision not to join the agreement reflects their stance on nuclear energy as they continue to prioritize renewable energy sources for decarbonization efforts.
