Increased Recapture of Monkeys Near Research Facility

Yemassee, S.C. – Update on Escaped Monkeys: 39 Recaptured and in Good Health

On Monday night, Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard announced that 39 of the 43 monkeys that escaped from the research facility on November 6 have been recaptured. In a post shared on the Yemassee Police Department’s Facebook page, Westergaard confirmed that the recaptured monkeys returned to the facility voluntarily and were found to be "safe and sound, in good health, and in good spirits."

The successful recovery efforts continued over the weekend, with two monkeys trapped and examined on Sunday. Westergaard reassured the public that these animals, alongside others previously captured, are in “excellent condition.” The search for the remaining escaped monkeys intensified after multiple reported sightings in the vicinity of the research facility, with Westergaard estimating around eight monkeys still at large as of last Friday. Witnesses described seeing them "dancing and running about in the trees."

All captured monkeys have been feasting on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, as well as specialized monkey chow, which is formulated for the facility’s rhesus macaques. Westergaard, a trained behavioral primatologist, personally confirmed the well-being of the recaptured animals, stating they showed signs of being well-adjusted and happy.

Trapping operations resumed early Monday morning and will continue as long as necessary. Westergaard expressed gratitude for the support from the community and reiterated his commitment to providing updates on the situation through the police department’s social media channels. The hope remains to recover the final four monkeys while ensuring their safety and health during the ongoing efforts.
