Donald Trump continues his winning streak in South Carolina as he is projected to win the presidential vote in the state, marking his fifth consecutive victory in the region. The Associated Press declared Trump the winner over Vice President Kamala Harris with 60 percent of the vote reported. This victory extends the GOP’s presidential hold on South Carolina for 44 years, with the last Democrat to win being Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Trump is expected to receive all nine of South Carolina’s Electoral College votes, bringing him closer to the 270 needed to claim the White House. Despite little campaigning in South Carolina, Trump secured support from prominent state figures, including U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, Governor Henry McMaster, and other Republican officials. However, former Governor Nikki Haley, who endorsed Trump, was not actively involved in the campaign.
During his campaign visits to South Carolina, Trump expressed gratitude for the support he received in the state. His last appearance in the region was in September 2023, where he highlighted the unprecedented levels of support he witnessed in South Carolina. Overall, Trump’s victory in South Carolina adds to his successful track record in the state and solidifies his standing as the projected winner of the presidential election.
