First Responders Night at North Charleston Coliseum to Honor Local Heroes
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays will pay tribute to local First Responders on Saturday, November 23, during their First Responders Night, presented by ServiceMaster of Charleston. Taking place at the North Charleston Coliseum, the event features a game against the Adirondack Thunder, starting at 6:05 pm, celebrating the dedication of community heroes.
Among those honored is Stingrays alum and firefighter Hugo Marchand. The 45-year-old Montreal native played for the Stingrays from 2000 to 2002, earning a spot on the 2001 Kelly Cup Championship team. Marchand has dedicated over 17 years to serving the Lowcountry as a firefighter, currently working at Johns Island Station 17.
After being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1997, Marchand joined the Stingrays, where he became known for his gritty play, amassing 122 penalty minutes in the 2000-01 season. Reflecting on that championship year, he shared, "Charleston has always been a special place… I’ve made lifelong bonds with my teammates."
Transitioning from hockey to firefighting, Marchand began his new career almost by chance while looking for a steady job. Now, he finds fulfillment in helping others during their most challenging moments. “It’s most rewarding when you know you’re making a difference,” he said, emphasizing the adrenaline-driven environment reminiscent of his hockey days.
On Saturday, the Stingrays will wear specialty jerseys to honor First Responders, with proceeds from their auction benefiting local organizations, including the Low Country Firefighters Support Team. Fans are encouraged to attend the game to support those who serve our community, with tickets available online for an evening of celebration and remembrance.
