A newly launched social media platform called Bluesky is rapidly gaining popularity as users migrate from X, formerly known as Twitter. Bluesky’s chief executive Jay Graber attributes the platform’s success to providing users with a positive experience free from harassment, bots, and spam.
Compared to X, Bluesky offers users more control over their experience, including the ability to select algorithms for custom feeds tailored to their preferences. Bluesky also has anti-toxicity features to prevent unwanted interactions and detach original posts from quote posts.
Bluesky’s user base has surged recently, with over one million new sign-ups following significant events like Trump’s election win. Despite this growth, Bluesky still lags behind X in terms of total users.
In the UK, popular personalities such as Susie Dent, Alastair Campbell, Chris Packham, Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais, and Carol Vorderman have amassed significant followings on Bluesky. Globally, figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mark Hamill, Stephen King, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Ben Stiller are among the most followed accounts on the platform.
Bluesky’s rise in popularity comes amid concerns about X, including accusations of spreading misinformation, engaging with misleading content, and being overrun by bots. As users seek alternatives that offer a better experience and more control, Bluesky has emerged as a promising option for those looking for a social media platform free from the issues plaguing other platforms.
