A former South Carolina assistant named as interim head coach in the NFL

Former South Carolina football assistant coach Thomas Brown has been named the interim head coach of the Chicago Bears following the firing of Matt Eberflus on Friday. Brown, who was previously the interim offensive coordinator with the Bears, is now taking on the head coaching role. While it is unclear if he will be a long-term replacement for Eberflus, Brown is highly regarded by his players and NFL executives see him as a potential future head coach.

Before joining the Bears, Brown had stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers in the NFL. He was the offensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2023 and was part of the Rams’ coaching staff when they won Super Bowl LVI. Brown also spent time as a coach with the South Carolina football program in 2019, helping several players transition to the NFL.

As the new head coach of the Bears, Brown will be overseeing former Gamecock defensive tackle Zacch Pickens and former assistant coach Jon Hoke. With the team struggling this season, Brown will have the opportunity to prove himself in the head coaching role for the remainder of the 2024 season. Despite his rapid rise in the organization, there are high hopes for Brown’s potential as a head coach in the NFL.
