Donald Trump clinched a victory in the battleground state of Georgia, narrowing Kamala Harris’ path to the presidency and bolstering his own chances of reaching the 270 electoral votes needed to win. Harris, heavily relying on Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin for her own pathway to victory, saw her watch party crowd thin out after midnight as the race heated up. Trump also secured wins in Florida, Texas, South Carolina, and Indiana, while Harris won Virginia, New York, New Mexico, and California, among others. The Trump campaign made targeted efforts to sway Black and Latino voters, resulting in slightly higher support for Trump compared to 2020. The closeness of the race and concerns over democracy drove voter turnout, with Trump focusing on immigration and inflation while Harris accused him of being a fascist. Despite a smooth election process, some minor disruptions were reported, with no impact on the final outcome. As the historic election unfolded, Harris aimed to become the first woman, Black woman, and person of South Asian descent to serve as president, while Trump aimed to become the oldest president ever elected and the first to win a second term after being defeated. The outcome of the election would also decide other critical races, including control of Congress and state ballot measures on abortion access in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In the end, Florida saw a ballot measure protecting abortion rights fail, while other states like New York, Colorado, and Maryland approved measures to safeguard abortion rights in their state constitutions.
