The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is not just about road projects and orange cones; it is also looking towards the future of technology. One of the technologies being explored is truck automation, specifically platooning, where a lead truck controls the semi-truck behind it. INDOT is conducting research along Interstate 70 with Ohio to create a truck automation corridor.
There is a national shortage of truck drivers, and the use of autonomous vehicles could help improve drivers’ productivity and safety. The American Trucking Association has addressed this issue and highlighted the importance of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.
INDOT is also looking into electric vehicles and plans to invest nearly $100 million in federal funds to build an EV charging network along Indiana’s alternative fuel corridors. Additionally, a pilot project to develop and test an electrified roadway is underway in partnership with various organizations.
The electrified roadway would directly charge vehicles while in motion, but there are hurdles to overcome, such as the weight of the battery. The technology for electric trucks to use the roadway would need to improve significantly for it to be feasible.
Overall, INDOT is looking towards the future of technology in transportation and is exploring various options to improve safety, productivity, and efficiency on the state’s highways.
