South Carolina’s American Heart Association to Hold State Advocacy Day on Feb. 13

The American Heart Association, South Carolina, is hosting a State Advocacy Day on February 13, 2025, in Columbia. The event will focus on key initiatives such as the Smart Heart Act and Medicaid Expansion to improve public health in the state. Advocates, community members, and healthcare professionals will engage with lawmakers to support policies that protect students from sudden cardiac arrest and expand healthcare access.

The Smart Heart Act aims to implement cardiac emergency response plans in schools to improve survival chances for students experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The event will feature Lekesha Benson, who lost her son to sudden cardiac arrest, advocating for awareness and action.

Additionally, Medicaid Expansion is being promoted to provide coverage to 345,000 South Carolinians in need of healthcare. Multiple advocacy efforts, including SMBP services, increasing funding for tobacco cessation programs, and expanding non-profit tax exemptions, will also be discussed during the event.

Supporters of heart health are encouraged to join State Advocacy Day to make a difference in creating healthier communities in South Carolina. For more information and registration, visit the American Heart Association website.
