South Carolina politicians have expressed their condolences following a deadly mid-air collision in Washington, D.C. between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines jet. The crash, which occurred as the jet was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport, resulted in a large search-and-rescue operation in the Potomac River. Governor Henry McMaster, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, Congressman James E. Clyburn, Senator Tim Scott, and Representative Joe Wilson all shared their thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.
The crash has several connections to the Carolinas, with the flight crew based out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The plane, which was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, had a stop at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina before continuing on to Washington. Several American Airlines flights to and from D.C. were canceled at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in response to the tragedy.
The Federal Aviation Administration, National Traffic Safety Board, and Department of Defense are investigating the incident. Congressman Clyburn, who serves on the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, is monitoring the situation and working to prevent future tragedies. The crash is now considered the deadliest plane crash in the U.S. since 2009, with all passengers and crew members on both aircraft being killed.
