South Carolina Senate moves forward with updated K-12 school voucher legislation

South Carolina is on the brink of reinstating a private school voucher program that was previously ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court. The Education Scholarship Trust Fund bill passed in the Senate by a vote of 32-12, with one GOP member joining Senate Democrats in opposition. The bill aims to use money from the state’s Education Lottery to fund the voucher program, allowing up to 10,000 students from low-income families to receive $7,500 for private school tuition next year. The number of eligible students could increase to 15,000 by 2027. Critics, including Senate Democrats and the League of Women Voters, argue that the focus should be on funding public schools rather than diverting money to private institutions. Governor Henry McMaster has urged the General Assembly to take action, stating that parents should have the right to choose their child’s education. The bill now awaits a final vote in the Senate before heading to the House of Representatives. Opposition to the bill remains strong, especially regarding the use of lottery revenue to support the program.
