Quartet of Monkeys Reunited at ‘Monkey Farm’ in South Carolina

Officials in South Carolina have successfully recaptured the last of 43 monkeys that escaped from a monkey farm in early November. The monkeys, all female rhesus macaques, had been living in the woods for weeks after an employee failed to secure their enclosure properly. Alpha Genesis, the company that owns the farm, offered special foods to entice the monkeys back, such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and “monkey biscuits.” Most of the monkeys were safely returned with the use of humane traps and monitoring by employees. The monkeys, who never posed a threat to public health, experienced a rare snowstorm during their time in the wild. Alpha Genesis raises the monkeys for sale to medical labs and researchers, as they share about 93 percent of DNA with humans. The incident highlighted the importance of properly securing enclosures and the peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.
