Small plane crash causes fire near residential area and shopping center in Philadelphia

An air ambulance operated by Jet Rescue crashed near a mall in northeast Philadelphia, carrying a total of six people including four crew members, a pediatric patient, and the patient’s escort. The company expressed concern for the victims and their families, as well as any other individuals who may have been injured on the ground. The exact number of casualties was unknown, but several dwellings and vehicles were impacted by the crash. The Learjet 55 was en route from Northeast Philadelphia Airport to Missouri when it crashed shortly after takeoff. The FAA and NTSB will be conducting an investigation into the incident. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered state resources to assist with the response efforts.

Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft descending in flames before crashing into a dense community, causing an explosion upon impact. The crash occurred under unusual weather conditions with a wind gust of 30 mph and light rain in the area. Rev. Todd Sheridan Yeary, a former air traffic controller, noted that the aircraft had a reputation for airworthiness, suggesting that a catastrophic event likely occurred after takeoff.

The crash comes shortly after a deadly aviation incident in Washington, D.C. where 67 people were killed in a midair collision between a passenger plane and a Black Hawk helicopter. The investigation into the Philadelphia crash is currently ongoing, with updates to follow as more information becomes available.
