South Carolina executes inmate Marion Bowman Jr., marking the state’s third execution since September.

South Carolina carried out its third execution in four months, bringing an end to a 13-year pause in executions due to the unavailability of lethal injection drugs. Marion Bowman Jr. was put to death for the murder of a friend, Kandee Martin, whose body was found in the trunk of a car. Bowman maintained his innocence throughout the process, but his appeals were exhausted. Despite being offered a plea deal for a life sentence, Bowman chose to go to trial proclaiming his innocence.

His execution marks the first in the U.S. in 2025 and comes after the state passed a shield law allowing for the procurement of lethal injection drugs from a compounding pharmacy. Bowman’s final meal included fried seafood, chicken wings, desserts, and juices. His lawyer stated that after battling a broken system for over two decades, Bowman refused to legitimize an unjust process that had already taken so much of his life. South Carolina plans to continue with executions every five weeks until the backlog is cleared.
