South Carolina Senate approves bill to allocate lottery funds for private school scholarships

South Carolina is on the brink of reintroducing its ‘School Choice’ program with the passage of a bill in the State Senate that would use Education Lottery funds to support private school scholarships and other expenses. The bill, supported by State Sen. Larry Grooms and two other sponsors, aims to provide up to 10,000 students with $7,500 in its first year, with eligibility expanding to 15,000 students by 2027. This initiative has been praised for driving competition and creating new educational opportunities.

However, critics, including public high school teacher Kathleen Low, argue that the state’s education lottery money should be directed towards existing needs such as updating the public school bus fleet and funding in-state college scholarships. Low is concerned that prioritizing costs for private education over public school needs could lead to teacher burnout and a loss of educators in the public school system.

The bill now moves to the State House, where its support remains uncertain as House Republicans may not back the use of lottery funding for the program.
