Evacuations during ceasefire provide critical help for Gaza’s sick and injured children.

A group of 37 ill and injured patients, including many children with cancer, were able to leave Gaza for medical treatment on Saturday after nine months of being unable to do so. The patients were evacuated through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The evacuations are supervised by the World Health Organization, with 50 patients and wounded individuals set to be evacuated daily. Thousands of critical patients are in need of medical treatment that Gaza’s war-ravaged hospitals cannot provide, including those with trauma injuries, chronic illnesses, and cancer.

The conflict in Gaza has severely impacted the healthcare system, with hundreds of attacks on health facilities and healthcare workers, leading to limited access to medicine and treatment for many. The situation has become dire for many patients, with two children scheduled for evacuation on Saturday passing away before they could leave. The United Nations has called for the immediate evacuation of 2,500 children with the guarantee that they will be able to return to their families.

Medical evacuations from Gaza were rare even before the closure of the Rafah crossing in May 2024, with only a few patients being able to leave for lifesaving care. The recent evacuations mark a small but critical step in addressing the overwhelming healthcare needs of the people of Gaza, particularly children who have been left without access to necessary medical treatment.
