Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, declares retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s executive order

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. in response to President Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian exports. Trudeau stated that the tariffs on American goods would include a 25% tariff on $155 billion in U.S. goods, to be implemented in stages. The tariffs will affect a wide range of products, including beer, wine, fruits, clothing, and furniture.

In addition to Canada, Mexico also plans to implement retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum instructed her secretary of the economy to implement measures to defend Mexico’s interests. She criticized the tariffs and stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in combating criminal organizations.

China, another target of Trump’s tariffs, has not yet responded to the latest round of tariffs. Trump has attributed his decision to impose tariffs on the threat of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, entering the U.S. China, Mexico, and Canada are the top three suppliers of imports to the U.S., and experts warn that the ongoing trade war could have far-reaching effects beyond the economy, potentially impacting national security and health initiatives.

Trump’s executive order imposing tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China follows his previous promises to address trade imbalances with these countries. The move has sparked fears of a renewed trade war, as all three countries are key economic partners of the U.S. and have historically had stable economic relationships.
