Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, cautions Panama’s president about the threat of Chinese influence on the Panama Canal.

During a meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, Rubio expressed President Trump’s concern about Chinese influence over the Panama Canal. Rubio emphasized that the current situation is unacceptable and that the U.S. may need to take measures to protect its rights under the Treaty. It is unclear if these measures could include military force. Mulino denied Chinese control over the canal, which is currently governed by the Panama Canal Authority after being transitioned from U.S. control by 1999.

Rubio also discussed the migration crisis and climate investment with Mulino and expressed support for a free and democratic Venezuela. Following the meeting, Mulino announced that Panama is looking to end its involvement in China’s Silk Road Initiative early, with no plans to renew the agreement in the future. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz praised this decision as a positive step.

President Trump previously mentioned the possibility of using military force to gain control of the Panama Canal. Rubio’s meeting with Mulino highlighted various issues, including the Chinese influence in the region, and Mulino’s stance on Venezuela. The U.S. and Panama are working together to address these concerns and ensure the canal remains neutral and secure.
