New Start-up Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions in the Wastewater Industry using Advanced Sensor Technology and AI

Variolytics has successfully closed a growth financing round led by Nordic Alpha Partners (NAP) to support their mission of decarbonizing the wastewater sector. The company, founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the Fraunhofer Institute, has developed sensor technology to detect and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in wastewater treatment plants. The investment from NAP, along with contributions from the European Innovation Council, High-Tech Gründerfonds, and Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fonds, will further advance Variolytics’ innovative solutions.

Research indicates that wastewater treatment plants are significant emitters of CO2 and nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. Variolytics’ EmiCo solution offers real-time measurements of N2O levels, allowing plant operators to adjust processes and reduce harmful emissions. The technology has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 50% and energy consumption by up to 20% within 12 months of installation.

NAP’s investment will support Variolytics in commercial expansion and product development. The company’s technology aligns with NAP’s approach of being Better, Cheaper, Simpler to integrate, and Available at scale. Variolytics’ partnership with NAP aims to scale their sensor technology and software platform to achieve significant growth in the water technology sector.

The investment from NAP, alongside existing investors HTGF and FTTF, as well as new investor EIC, will further propel Variolytics’ mission to drive impactful reductions in emissions and support the journey towards a net-zero future. The transaction is expected to be completed in Q1 of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.
