Conservative author Darren Beattie has been appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Beattie, who has spread conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, has a history of making inflammatory remarks, including stating that “competent white men must be in charge.” The State Department has not yet commented on his appointment, which requires Senate confirmation.
Beattie confirmed his appointment in a letter on his website, Revolver News, saying he will suspend his involvement with the website to focus on his new role. His site has promoted baseless theories, including the idea that the Capitol attack was orchestrated by the FBI, or “Fedsurrection.” Former President Trump has supported Beattie’s work and cited it in challenging the narrative surrounding the Jan. 6 incident.
Beattie was fired from the Trump White House in 2018 after his association with white nationalists came to light. He has also served as a senior adviser to Rep. Matt Gaetz and was appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad by the Trump administration, a move that was criticized by the Anti-Defamation League. The Biden administration subsequently asked for his resignation from this position.
Despite his controversial past, Beattie’s appointment has been heralded by Revolver News as a victory against the mainstream media’s labeling of him as a “conspiracy theorist.” Critics fear that his appointment may further polarize the political landscape and detract from efforts to foster unity and inclusivity in leadership positions.
