A new portion of the Child Online Safety Act has been implemented in South Carolina at the beginning of the year, requiring commercial entities to restrict access to harmful material for minors. This law aims to reduce minors’ exposure to pornographic content online, with sellers of adult entertainment now required to use “commercially reasonable” age verification methods to ensure users are over 18. Methods can include digitized ID cards or third-party age verification services. Although the Act was initially introduced in May of the previous year, this specific section only came into full enforcement on January 1, 2025. State leaders hope this new measure will contribute to a safer online environment for minors.
