South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver is advocating for the creation of a $100 million Education Infrastructure Bank to address the aging infrastructure in rural schools. Currently, school districts rely on local funding and state grants for construction and renovations, but Weaver believes more sustainable funding is needed. She has identified 36 school districts in need of improvements.
South Carolina ranks in the top 10 states for rural school needs, with previous funding initiatives only making a small impact compared to the overall needs. Weaver argues that a dedicated funding source is necessary for long-term support and sustainability in the state’s education system.
The proposed Education Infrastructure Bank would also allow charter schools to be eligible for funding. Lawmakers must decide on the specifics of the program, including the application process for schools seeking funds. Weaver believes this initiative is a necessary investment for the long-term educational excellence in South Carolina. If approved, the program would be included in the upcoming state budget beginning in July.
