Rest of the World, a nonprofit publication highlighting the global impact of technology, recently held its annual photo contest to showcase the diverse ways technology influences communities around the world. With 227 submissions from 45 countries, the winners captured scenes unimaginable just a few years ago.
The top three photos paint a vivid picture of this impact. Grace Yoon’s first-place photo depicts migrants undergoing facial scans at the U.S.-Mexico border, highlighting the dehumanizing effects of technology. Saumya Khandelwal’s second-place image shows a young woman in India preparing for government exams while balancing household duties and parenting. Claire Thomas’ third-place photo captures a Mongolian family watching a documentary through modern technology in a remote region.
Additionally, six honorable mentions, including a photo from Danilo Victoriano in the Philippines of children playing basketball near wind turbines, showcase the evolving relationship between people and technology. From traditional attire combined with repurposed VHS tapes to iris scanners used for payment in refugee camps, these images reflect the ever-changing landscape of technological integration.
The judging process involved 26 individuals across the newsroom, with visuals head Kate Bubacz noting the significance of the submissions. As technology continues to shape our lives, these photos serve as a powerful reminder of the immense impact it has on communities worldwide. Each image tells a unique story, shedding light on the promising and potentially threatening realities of our technological future.
