The University of South Carolina baseball team started their season strong with a 5-3 win over Sacred Heart on Opening Day. Head Coach Paul Mainieri earned his first win with the Gamecocks, adding to his impressive career record of 1,506 victories. Carolina scored runs in the first three innings, with Ethan Petry hitting a home run in the third. Sacred Heart tied the game in the sixth, but Carolina pulled ahead with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The pitching staff struck out 16 batters, with Dylan Eskew starting the game and earning nine strikeouts in five innings. Parker Marlatt and Brendan Sweeney also contributed to the strong pitching performance. Nathan Hall led the team with two hits in the win. Petry’s home run moved him into fourth place on Carolina’s career home run list. Marlatt remained undefeated in his Carolina career with a 4-0 record. The Gamecocks will continue their series with Sacred Heart on Saturday, with a dedication ceremony for Ray Tanner before the game. Carolina has now won their last six season openers and looks to continue their success in the rest of the series.
